Perquin, El Salvador

by Walls of Hope

This mural is on the exterior wall of CEBES, Comunidades Eclesiales de Base de El Salvador, in Perquin, El Salvador. Padre Rogelio Ponseele, a Belgian priest who fought the war in Morazan wanted the portraits of Monseñor Romero, Sister Silvia and Octavio Ortiz Luna to be depicted in the mural. All three were assassinated by the military in El Salvador during twelve years of Civil War.

Archbishop Romero became “The Voice of the Voiceless” by confronting the military. He begged for international intervention and refused to attend any government function until the people were no longer being repressed. He labored constantly to bring justice to El Salvador, publicly indicting the military and the government. On March 24, 1980, while giving mass at the small church of the “Hospitalito”, he was shot as he raised the Sacred Host in the moment of the transformation of bread into the Body of Christ.
